Are chiropractic manipulations safe?

If you are thinking about having chiropractic manipulations, you might wonder whether or not there are any risks involved? This is a natural concern, and as a leading chiropractor in [location], many of our patients ask this question before their treatment begins.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, ACA, there are less than one million people each year who will experience an adverse side effect from chiropractic care. In general, those who are taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug will be at a greater risk for suffering from a side effect. Most side effects included stiffness, light pain, and bruising. This typically resolved itself in less than one week.

Red Flags in Chiropractic Care

There are various medical ailments that are considered to be red flags in chiropractic care. These could contradict the benefits of the treatment. In general, when any of the following apply to a patient, a chiropractor will not recommend manipulations.

  • Bone tumors
  • Severe bone cancer
  • Paget’s disease
  • Brittle bone disease
  • Certain spinal surgeries (and have not healed)
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Certain infections

In addition to the above, some neurological conditions are considered to be a red flag. This is true, as well as anything that causes unstable joints. Depending on the individual patient, a chiropractor might be weary to recommend a manipulation to anyone with:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Reiter’s syndrome
  • Infection in the joints
  • Some bleeding disorders

To prevent further harm or complications, a good chiropractor will evaluate your medical history, any current or ongoing conditions, and other factors before a spinal manipulation treatment. In the event you are not a candidate for chiropractic care, low velocity procedures or a special, custom treatment might be recommended. For example, if you have a condition that causes severe bruising or weakened bones, standard adjustments may not be recommended to you. That being said, a chiropractor may create a treatment plan that includes other options, such as electrical stimulation.

Treatments for Red Flag Medical Conditions

Most chiropractors are also familiar with other therapies outside of manipulation. Some will offer these at their clinic, or be able to recommend a partner clinic. Treatments that may be suited to red flag conditions include massage, acupuncture, electrical stimulation, water therapy, rehabilitation, physical therapy, etx.

Communicating With Your Doctor

Many chiropractors will communicate with your doctor to ensure you are getting the best care. This is particularly true when a red flag condition or postsurgical pain is relevant.
